MARYLEBONE TOWNHOUSE

When I was asked to design this house, it was a blank canvas—painted white, with many of its original features stripped away. Drawing inspiration from the elegance of the Art Deco era, I sought to reintroduce the grandeur and character that the house deserved, while maintaining a modern aesthetic that feels fresh and current.

Living and Dining Room Transformation: A Revival of Elegance and Opulence

The transformation of the living and dining rooms was a meticulous process, centered around restoring and enhancing the spaces with rich textures, classic design elements, and carefully selected furnishings.

Decorative Accents & Furnishings

To enhance the character of the spaces, I sourced antique vases, figures, and ginger jars that now sit proudly on the fireplaces, adding a touch of history and charm. The Roman blinds were custom-made using luxurious textiles that brought a sense of richness and warmth to the rooms. The living room features a chinoiserie theme, with the blinds in a rich fabric that ties in with this motif. In the dining room, I opted for a jade and gold textile, perfectly matching the exquisite Murano glass chandelier that I found, which serves as a stunning centerpiece.

The existing sofa was revitalized with an array of textured cushions in green and pink, adding layers of comfort and color. Additionally, I commissioned bespoke cushions from Pierre Frey in a handwoven fabric that features geometric stripes, matching the Art Deco aesthetic I envisioned for the space. These cushions, in black and white, as well as black, white, and green, add a modern yet timeless flair.

Fireplaces & Architectural Details

The original fireplaces were removed, making way for stunning, salvaged French chateau fireplaces. These marble masterpieces, adorned with intricate brass details, became the focal points of the rooms, exuding timeless elegance. To complement these grand fireplaces, I increased the height and width of the doors, making them more imposing and in proportion with the rooms. New mouldings were installed to harmonize with the existing ones, which were carefully repaired to retain their historical integrity. The walls were painted a warm terracotta pink, with the mouldings highlighted in a complementary white, creating a cozy yet sophisticated ambiance.

Restored Seating

The existing chairs were reupholstered, breathing new life into them and making them an integral part of the room's design. Their restored vibrancy now complements the overall aesthetic, tying the room together and ensuring that each piece of furniture contributes to the space's cohesive, luxurious feel.

This transformation turned the living and dining rooms into spaces that not only reflect the home’s historical charm but also exude a refined, curated elegance that is both inviting and inspiring.

Bedrooms and Study: Personalized Spaces with Art Deco Accents

For the bedrooms and study, I developed design schemes that offer a perfect blend of personal expression and cohesive style. The Art Deco influence is evident in the use of bold lines, luxurious textures, and carefully chosen furnishings, while the modern aesthetic ensures that each space feels fresh and inviting. The study, designed to be both a productive workspace and a place of inspiration, features elements that nod to the past while firmly rooting the space in the present.

The Hallway: Restoring Grandeur with Art Deco Flair

The hallway, originally a stark and uninspired space, has been transformed into a statement of elegance. I reinstalled classic panelling and enhanced the doorways by increasing their width and height, creating a sense of drama reminiscent of the Art Deco period. Rich colors and geometric patterns were introduced to add depth and a touch of opulence, bridging the gap between classic and contemporary design.

Kitchen: Modern Sophistication Meets Art Deco Glamour

In the kitchen, a complete redesign was undertaken to blend modern functionality with Art Deco sophistication. A banquette seating area was thoughtfully integrated into an awkward corner, transforming it into a stylish and practical dining nook. Some existing cabinetry was clad in brass, paying homage to the luxurious materials of the era, while new painted doors handles and worktops were chosen to align with the overall aesthetic. The result is a kitchen that feels both timeless and cutting-edge.

Bathrooms: Contemporary Luxury with a Nod to the Past

Each bathroom was reimagined with a focus on modern elegance, infused with subtle Art Deco influences. The use of rich materials and bold fixtures creates spaces that are both functional and luxurious, echoing the era’s love for glamour while embracing today’s design sensibilities.

Dining Room Transformation: A Harmonious Extension of Elegance

The dining room was designed to seamlessly flow from the living room, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing connection between the two spaces. To achieve this, I painted the dining room in a complementary shade of pink, ensuring that the sightline from one room to the other was harmonious and inviting.

Decorative Details

The fireplace in the dining room is adorned with a carefully curated display of jars and objets d'art, each piece chosen to complement the room’s color scheme. These items not only add visual interest but also enhance the room's sense of luxury and sophistication, creating a space that is both stylish and welcoming.

This thoughtful approach to design ensured that the dining room is not only a standalone masterpiece but also an integral part of the home’s overall aesthetic, offering a seamless transition from the living room while maintaining its own distinct character.

Lighting & Fabrics

Central to the dining room’s design is the exquisite Murano glass chandelier, which I carefully selected to perfectly match the luxurious fabric of the Roman blinds. This chandelier not only serves as a striking focal point but also ties together the room's color scheme with its delicate interplay of gold, jade green, and pink. The chair cushions were upholstered in a rare, limited-edition fabric that echoes these same hues, adding a touch of exclusivity and elegance to the dining area.

To further enhance the Art Deco aesthetic, the light shades were custom-made using the same fabric, featuring complementary color tassels that add a refined detail. These shades introduce a cohesive design element that brings the room together, highlighting the chandelier and the overall theme.

Overall Transformation

The house was transformed from a stripped-down, white-washed shell into a vibrant, character-filled home that seamlessly blends the glamour of the Art Deco era with a modern, sophisticated aesthetic. Every detail, from the restored grandeur of the hallway to the carefully curated bedrooms, was designed to create a living space that is both stylish and functional, honoring the past while embracing the future.
